Start with code.org
Time flies. About 4 years ago, I wrote an article about teaching kids to program through code.org. Code.org is a great resource for young people to learn the basics of programming (CodeCombat is an official Code.org partner). In the article, I shared a photo of my then 6-year-old son, Ari, holding a laptop. He learned a lot about programming and using PCs.
Enter the world of CodeCombat
Next, I introduced him to CodeCombat because there were some features of this product that I liked.
First of all, CodeCombat is a web interface . There is no need to install software, set up anything, etc. You can start learning programming languages by just clicking on the website.
CodeCombat will gradually guide children through the common grammatical concepts of programming. For example, the following screenshot:
The language here is set to Python , and some common programming constructs are stacked in the code, including:
- annotation
- variable
- Data Types
- method
- parameter
You can write your own code, fix it if it's wrong, and test it, just like real software engineering.
The storylines and animations of the heroes and enemies in CodeCombat make programming more interactive and engaging for kids.
I am so happy to have found something that can keep the kids sitting still without being boring.
In short, I strongly recommend that parents with children let their children try CodeCombat to open a window for their programming learning.
