What is CodeCombat?
What is the best age group to learn CodeCombat?
CodeCombat is mainly suitable for elementary school to high school students.
What programming languages are included in CodeCombat?
We currently offer two programming languages: Python and JavaScript. Java and C++ are under development and testing, and will be released soon, so stay tuned!
–Why Python?
Python is a very suitable choice for programming language beginners. It is also used by companies such as Google and Facebook. It is currently the most popular introductory computer science language in top American universities.
– Why JavaScript?
JavaScript is a web development language, and almost all websites use JavaScript-related development technologies. You can learn JavaScript in the Web Development section of CodeCombat. At the same time, CodeCombat allows you to learn simple and efficient conversions between Python and JavaScript web development.
Can I teach a course independently using CodeCombat?
Yes, each level of CodeCombat has been analyzed and tested to be the most suitable learning mode for each student. Each level provides hints but does not directly provide answers, helping students analyze and understand the problems. Challenge levels allow students to self-evaluate their learning outcomes.
In addition, these syllabuses and teaching materials are specially designed for IT teachers who do not have a professional background in computer science. CodeCombat is widely used by schools around the world as a computer teaching material. We also provide a course outline, including course planning, course links, course activities and homework rewards to stimulate students' thinking and learning motivation.
How much does it cost to purchase the courses and the teaching materials that come with them?
We will provide preferential quotes and teacher resources based on your student number and teaching needs. Please fill in the contact form on the webpage or send an email to service@ai4kids.ai to contact us!
I want to try it out before paying. Does CodeCombat offer free trials to teachers?
Yes, the "Introduction to Computer Science" (CS1) course in CodeCombat does not require any license to enter. The trial course will be approximately 1-3 hours in length, depending on the student's age and programming background.
If a student does not have an email address, can an account be created?
Can. When logging in and registering, students select their account type, and then use the teacher's class code to join the class.
Can I track my students' progress?
Can. The teacher-specific interface provides detailed information on student progress, completion time, and overall class data performance. Teachers can also assign and manage student coursework.
Does CodeCombat support iPad devices?
CodeCombat does not currently support iPad devices or Android tablets.
About recommended browsers and operating system information?
The recommended minimum computer capacity is 4GB, and the browser is Google, Safari, and Windows or Apple system is recommended. The computer network bandwidth needs to be at least 200 Kbps/each student.
I have students with different computer science backgrounds in my class. How can CodeCombat help me solve my teaching problems?
CodeCombat solves this problem by providing students with a personalized learning experience. If students have different learning efficiencies, they need guidance in terms of concepts and learning methods. We built two new features: Hints and Beginner's Levels to help slower learners.
-hint
When students get stuck on a level, there is a blue "Hint" button in the upper right corner of each level. There will be a detailed explanation of the concept at the current level, and additional detailed steps will be provided to help students solve the problem.
– Getting Started Level
JavaScript is a web development language, and almost all websites use JavaScript-related development technologies. You can learn JavaScript in the Web Development section of CodeCombat. At the same time, CodeCombat allows you to learn simple and efficient conversions between Python and JavaScript web development.
What is the difficulty level of the arena after the course?
The Arena is an open level for students to further hone their learned programming skills. You can allow more advanced students to enter the Arena to explore multiplayer tactics in depth, while lagging students can catch up. When everyone has reached a level where they can enter the Arena, you can then have a tournament. This ensures that every student is at the same level of progress by the end of the course.
Can students create and share their own projects in CodeCombat?
CodeCombat includes courses on game design and web development. Become a “creator” within the course unit. At the end of these courses, students can also share links to these works on social media such as WeChat Moments.
What are the contents of web development and game design courses?
– Web Development
In the web development course, students can learn the basics of programming languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. All pages will have their own URL link, which students can share with their friends and family.
– Game Design
In CodeCombat's game design course, students will learn to create a CodeCombat game level and share these levels with their friends and family so that they can experience the games designed by students. Students will gradually unlock more tools to design more complex levels.
If ability allows, can students skip the first few basic levels?
Even if students already understand the concepts, we still recommend completing the levels in order to help them get familiar and build a foundation. CodeCombat's levels are logically structured to help students build confidence and make progress. In this way, students can gradually learn how to learn more complex advanced courses.
Do teachers need to buy a license to pass the levels like students do?
Teachers also need a license to unlock other levels. Teachers can preview and play all game levels on the course manual page and select a level from the drop-down list. However, the game progress will not be saved.
How do I start teaching CodeCombat?
Please refer to the following steps:
1. Create a teacher account
2. Create a class
3. Add students
4. Purchase a license for your student
5. Students can join the class using your class code
Is there a limit to the number of students that can be in the Introduction to Computer Science course?
No
How do I share my license with other teachers at my school?
Go to the Student Licenses page and click "Shared Licenses" under any group license. You can share unused licenses with other teachers in your school.
How to check students’ mastery of relevant teaching concepts?
CodeCombat conducts periodic evaluation of students through the form of "challenge levels". Challenge levels require students to unlock them in the "Computer Science Course". Teachers can view students' course performance in the "Evaluation" tab of each "class".
What is the difference between the two challenge level types?
When students have completed all levels related to a certain topic, the "Topic Challenge Level" will be unlocked, and the "Concept Challenge Level" will replace the section test in the form of a challenge. When students have completed learning 2-4 new concepts, they only need to use at least one related concept to pass the level.
I am a teacher, how can I view the code of my students' level-breaking program?
Teachers can click on any student's green (challenge completed) or yellow (challenge in progress) checkmark in the Course Progress tab of a class to compare that student's level code with the CodeCombat course content.
Are there any strategies for all the levels?
The walkthrough for each level (including challenge levels) can be found in the course guide for the relevant course, then click on the JavaScript or Python option for that level to view the relevant walkthrough. All teachers can view the walkthroughs for the Introduction to Computer Science section, but only teachers who have purchased licenses for their students can view the walkthroughs for all courses.
What are AP courses?
