AI Learning Map for K-12 Kids

If AI is important, where should children start? This is a question many parents have.
How to inspire children’s interest in learning? Do I need to have some basic knowledge of programming? Do children need to know about various AI algorithms?

Chen Shengwei, CEO of Taiwan Artificial Intelligence School and Chief Technology Officer of E.Sun Financial Holdings, gave the following advice to parents:

"AI technology has a big breakthrough every three months. When children graduate from college and enter the society, AI will be very different from today. So don't teach them by rote learning or derive too deep mathematical theories. First, make sure children are not afraid of computers. Design a good teaching environment and situational teaching so that children can naturally understand the operation of AI and feel how AI will be connected to life in the future."

"In daily life, we encourage children to think about and use AI, and use simple programming tools such as Scratch and Arduino to assemble and form an improvement plan. This is a way that parents or teachers can design to let children participate in AI learning."

Combining the Ministry of Education's 108 Information Technology Curriculum, the U.S. CSTA K12 Computer Science Learning Framework, and the recommendations of the American Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), comprehensive learning of AI from the first grade of elementary school (K1) to the third grade of high school (K12) should include six major processes:

Computational Thinking

According to the curriculum design of the Ministry of Education, computational thinking aims to cultivate children's thinking ability to use computational tools to analyze problems, develop problem-solving methods, and make effective decisions. Programming is a feasible way to cultivate computational thinking.

Computer Perception

Let children have opportunities to come into contact with sensor components, understand how computers perceive the world through "sensors", and the differences between various computer perceptions such as vision, voice, vibration, light, temperature, etc., and understand the differences and limitations between computer perception and human perception.

Representation and Reasoning

Learn knowledge representation and various reasoning algorithms to understand how computers classify and identify information and make inferences to generate decisions. The application of simple classification, multiple classification and decision tree algorithm is an example.

Machine Learning

Machine learning is the core technology of artificial intelligence. Through practical experience, children can understand that machines can learn through "data", the three machine learning methods of supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and reinforcement learning, the basic architecture of neural networks, and how the selection of training data affects the results of machine learning.

Natural Interaction

Computers integrate multiple artificial intelligence features, such as image recognition, voice recognition, and automated robots, in order to achieve natural interaction with humans. Let children actually come into contact with such smart machines and equipment, understand the operating principles behind the robots, and know their limitations.

Social Impact

Teach children to pay attention to the biases and ethical issues of artificial intelligence, as well as the positive and negative impacts it may have on society. As future citizens, they will be able to maintain judgment in social construction and services surrounding a large number of artificial intelligence technologies, and know how to choose and make good use of this tool.

 

In the next ten years, AI technology will accelerate its entry into all walks of life and become closer to our daily lives. There will be no drivers in taxis, and the taxis will buy your breakfast on the way. AI will assist doctors in judging the patient's condition. Electrocardiograms, electroencephalograms, medical images... will first be labeled by AI. Farmers use machines to stably control the temperature, humidity and soil quality. There will be no cashiers in supermarkets, and smart kitchen utensils will prepare delicious meals, etc.

AI will lead to the emergence of more new opportunities. In the AI ​​learning process in 6 fields, children can use practical experience to develop their thinking ability and creativity. In the future, repetitive and complicated tasks will be done by technology. By removing these repetitive operations, the actual time that can be used every day will be relatively more. Considering possible new professional evaluation methods and the time you have to invest every day, instead of thinking about which direction you should invest in, it may be more meaningful to think about what is important to you, your own characteristics and passions.
